It is that time of the year again – when all these amazing contestants are getting ready to find out who is going take the crown. This year, we have the wonderful contestant Lucia Vejar running for Miss Cardinal.
Lucia is an outgoing and determined person. She has been part of the SBCUSD Explorer program for seven months and is participating in the Believe Walk to raise money for research leading to a cure for cancer. Lucia first found out about this event through the A.L.M.A.S Club. She was interested in participating because she loves helping people however she can and thought it would be nice to be able to attend and support all the people who had and still have cancer. Lucia mentioned it was a “nice and cute” experience and she really enjoyed being part of it.
A meaningful quote to Lucia is “To succeed in life you need two things: ignorance and confidence” ~ Mark Twain. Lucia says this quote connects to her life because all the times she underestimated herself would be her own ignorance about herself, especially her ability to manage and balance her grades and extracurricular activities. She also believes that for every obstacle she faces, she needs to have a bit of confidence to push through it and overcome whatever it is that life throws her way.
Miss Cardinal is not just a pageant or competition. It is a way to show how our students are dedicated to helping our school and community. They show this by going out and helping the community and participating in school events and by showing school spirit. Competing in Miss Cardinal is something that she wanted to do because she aspired to build new friendships and experience something new. Running for Miss Cardinal is something that she feels is out of her comfort zone but she is prepared to go out on that stage and do her best.
Lucia wants to graduate from a four-year university and have a family while also being a successful person. She mentioned she would like to apply to UC Santa Barbara and Cal State. “I would like to study Psychology,” she said when she explained she wanted to become a child therapist.
Lucia’s family is her support system. Her family has a strong bond. Her mom, in particular, motivates her to go after what she wants. “When she wants something she’ll go for it,” she says. All the encouragement Lucia gets from her family motivates her to want to do bigger and better things. Lucia has all AP and Honors classes and a GPA of 3.5. While this could be hard for some kids to achieve, but Lucia feels she is successful because she has a special group of people who support and care for her education.
To some, becoming Miss Cardinal might not seem important. However, at SBHS, it is a serious event and responsibility because it represents pride in our school and in our community. The contestants, their supporters, and those at San Bernardino High School want to show others how much effort is put into trying to make our community a better place. All these contestants are amazing, ambitious, and determined to win but only one will be crowned. Who will it be?
