A student meant to create and connect

At San Bernardino High School, we are fortunate to have a wide diversity of students. We have athletes, artists, school-oriented, musical, and passionate students. Our seniors have been working very hard to work towards graduation. Many of our students have extracurricular activities and outside responsibilities. It may be hard for students to find a balance between their student life and out-of-school life. So, let’s take a look at a student who is not only school-oriented but also an athlete and an artist.

Jethzabel Ivarra, a senior at San Bernardino High School, is not only a strong academic student, but she is also very creative. Jethzabel has many talents including crocheting, working with clay, and many other hobbies. Jethzabel loves to shop and listen to music, but she is also someone who enjoys staying home. She is an excellent student who always prioritizes her schoolwork. She is a very kind student who is always willing to lend a helping hand to those who need it. She is also funny, entertaining, and overall a good friend. Jethzabel is also a hard worker, a little stubborn, and unpredictable. Jethzabel can be seen walking through the halls on her way to class or hanging out with her boyfriend, Gustavo Abascal.

Along with her many hobbies, Jethzabel has always wanted to be able to make her own clothes. Jethzabel said her reason for this is that “The stores never have what I like, but when they do, they are just too expensive.” So, why not make it herself? We had the opportunity to see some of Jethzabel’s artistic skills with her clothing at the senior sunrise. Jethzabel showed up with pants that were decorated with patches, lace, and glitter.

Jethzabel is also unpredictable. She is outgoing and social, but she can also be quiet and serious. Jethzabel is somebody who loves spontaneous things like Sonny Angel mystery boxes and collecting food-themed stools.

This is some of Jethzabel’s crochet work. Crochet is one of her many hobbies and we can see that here. Jethzabel crocheted a Venom plush and a plush of Shorty from “Killer Klowns from Outer Space.”

Jethzabel is inspired by her mother. Jethzabel describes her by saying, “She has always been there for me and has always had my back. I can talk to her about anything and I always have her support.” Jethzabel says that her mom is, “like my friend, my hardworking friend who does not let anybody stop her.”

Jethzabel’s favorite memory with her mom was back when Jethzabel was in Kindergarten and it was Mother’s Day. “The kids had to show their mothers what they had made. I remember being super excited and happy when I saw my mom had shown up because I thought she probably was not going to be able to make it.” However, she did and Jethzabel remembers that moment of just feeling pure excitement.

Gustavo Abascal, also a senior at SBHS, has been dating Jethzabel since October 7th, 2021. Gustavo would describe Jethzabel as “outgoing, sometimes shy, unpredictable, good at managing time, and firm in what she believes in.” Gustavo reflects back on his favorite memory with Jethzabel where they went to Universal Studios, while Jethzabel says her favorite memory was going to the fair. Jethzabel recounts this time as just a vibe. They were having fun, and laughing, and they took some cute photos.

Ramon Esqueda, a senior at SBHS, is a good friend of Jethzabel. Ramon would describe Jethzabel as “kind, caring, and short.” He described their friendship as, “Pretty good. I care about her and she has been there since freshman year, so she is a pretty close person in my life.” Ramon and Jethzabel have an undoubtedly great friendship.

Jethzabel has so many hobbies, but that does not mean that she does not have struggles. “Some of my struggles are finding the motivation to get things done and really just putting myself out there. I deal with these by thinking about what wonderful opportunities can come with these particular things if I just go for them.” She said, “For example, if I get invited to an occasion but I get the feeling that I won’t do well, I just think about how this may be an opportunity that can take me far. I basically just try to do what’s best for my future.”

Jethzabel has some great advice to give to students who may struggle to find what they love to do. “Advice I would give to other people is to do what would make you proud of yourself later on in the future. If you get the career you wanted later on in life because you clutched up in high school, then that’s something to definitely be proud of yourself for later. School and everything that comes with it is temporary.”

Jethzabel is somebody who you can talk to and laugh with. She has a bright personality and she is someone who always works hard. She is a great friend to everyone who knows her and an overall great student.
