An interview with Mariah Bustamante, a junior at San Bernardino High School. She was interviewed about school, sports, and the things she would change on campus.

Jasmine Jacques: What sports or activities are you in?
Mariah Bustamante: I’m in waterpolo. It’s pretty fun, but I got hit in the face and have a lot of leg cramps. The team is chill, lots of sprints, but I’m going to be a pro, just watch and come to the games. I’m in the medical club which is interesting and we do a lot of new things. Oh, and we get food. My favorite part was learning about suture. I actually wanted a kit and I asked my dad for one, but I didn’t get it. I also really like bakery class. I feel like a housewife when I’m cleaning and sometimes I feel like a mom.
JJ: How have the first few weeks of school been for you?
MB: They’ve been pretty good, but I just haven’t met a lot of people. The classes aren’t hard, they’re just stressful and new, so I just have to get adjusted to it. I don’t like my third period. It’s music and recording. I just sit there and play piano. I’m also not used to the new school schedule. Oh, and I love my friends. They are very nice!
JJ: If you could change anything about the school, what would it be?
MB: Stop the construction. It’s taking up too much space and it’s way too crowded. I would like to see some more variety with electives and more funding for other sports. And I would like bus transportation because I don’t want to walk 20 minutes to school. We need to also get rid of advisory on Mondays. That would benefit my mental health. Also, go back to the old schedule.
JJ: How are you feeling about the rest of the school year?
MB: Pretty…I don’t know. I’m going to just flow through it and stay on track with grades. I also want to stay active and get more involved.
JJ: What is it that you would like to get more involved with?
MB: I want to get involved with the school, like clubs, sports, talk to people, and give ideas to the school.
JJ: Is there anything that worries you about the rest of the year?
MB: I’m worried I’m going to slack off and I don’t want to do that. I don’t want to go back to freshman and sophomore year of ditching.
JJ: Is there anything you are excited for during the year?
MB: I’m excited for the medical club because they do cool stuff. I’m thinking about joining the travel club. I’m probably going to check that out. I’m excited for waterpolo to start because it’s new for me. I just don’t really like aggressiveness. I am also excited for Halloween. I want to go to horror nights, but I’m going to need someone to go with me when I get scared.
