Danielle Villanueva is a participant in the Miss Cardinal competition. Danielle is also the mayor of Cardinal City; she is a very involved student who wants others to also be involved.
What makes you different from the other contestants?
I think that I’m different from other contestants because of how involved I am in this school. I really do care about it a lot, I’m always in sports, ASB which is student government, and ROTC. I think that I’m just really, really invested in our programs compared to the other contestants and you know, I put my heart out there.
What made you want to be so involved in school activities?
I think that it’s important to be well rounded, improving your life, not just focusing on academics, but improving your relationships, extracurricular activities are good for your health and getting into a good college. So I’m always really excited to put myself out there.
What are your strengths and your weaknesses?
My strengths are my liveliness and my ability to communicate with people. I would say that my weaknesses are sometimes being a perfectionist, because I feel like if you spread yourself too thin, you want to do perfect in every aspect, but I think it’s okay to do certain things really well and other things need to be put on the backburner sometimes.
Who is your biggest influence?
My biggest influence would be my three older brothers, because they’re so much older than me, and I think that they’ve been through almost everything. So if I ever have an issue, I can go to them because there’s a chance that they know exactly what I’m talking about.
Why did you decide to participate in the competition?
I decided to participate because I would really love to represent the school in a bigger way. I’m also the Cardinal City mayor. I do attend all of the city meetings, school rallies and everything that has to do with involvement on this campus. So I think that if I were Miss Cardinal, it would be a two in one and I could represent the school in both ways.
As the mayor of Cardinal City, do you feel pressure at times?
No, not necessarily. I think that we have a great student government and it’s never just one person. I think that when all students are involved, it’s fun. And if you get all of class involvement separately, things work themselves out.
If you could give a boy or girl younger than you advice, what would you tell them?
I would say to stop procrastinating because I think that is the number one issue in high school. Anyone younger than me should know that. The choices you make now will definitely catch up to you and affect you later.
If you win, what impact would you make?
I think that I would impact the school by advocating for issues and explaining our different causes at every event that Miss Cardinal was required to go to and I think that I would spread school spirit in a great way.
How would you describe San Bernardino High School to someone that has never been here before?
I would say that we definitely have a bad reputation at times, but every school has lots of potential, and when you really do get to know our programs, and our kids personally, you could see how great this place really is. It doesn’t matter how things look from the outside. It’s what happens and what’s going on within the school spirit on the inside.
What do you plan to do after high school?
I plan on attending a four year university such as Vanderbilt or Missouri State University, and I’d like to major in education.
What made you want to major in education?
I really love working with other people, especially younger kids. So elementary education would be a great major for me as well. I think that I’m able to build a real connection and I think that I could really improve people’s lives and make an impact by helping them choose a career.
In three words, how would you describe yourself to a stranger?
I would describe myself as lively, passionate, and considerate.
What do you think your greatest achievement is?
I think my greatest achievement is making varsity for all three sports that I’m involved in on this campus. Honestly, I remember in middle school, I was never really interested in sports. I know my family has always been involved, but I just never thought that was my thing. I really surprised myself by trying out everything, and I did succeed because I put in the work. I just think that it was really good for my development.
How has your overall high school experience been?
I think it’s been great. All four years, even though we had an online freshman year, have just been kind of busy. I feel like I’m always running around this campus but I love it because this is kind of my home. You’re here more than you are in your own house. I think that high school is going to be a really good memory for me and I’m excited to see where this takes me.
How did COVID impact your freshman year?
Honestly, I was very bored, and there was nothing to do after school, but my grades were fantastic. I think it really gave me a chance to focus on things like my education and my studying skills. I remember in my freshman year, I probably had over 100% in all my classes and I think I use those skills from freshman year into our actual in-person learning.
What would you like to say to the whole school?
All the little things matter and everything that we do on this campus reflects on us as a whole. I think that we all need to try our best, we need to really think about our actions, and our decisions. We need to get involved and do what’s best not just for ourselves but for the entire community.
Would you like to add anything else?
I think I’m just really excited for this pageant, and it’s important to all of us. I think it’s really fun. I just hope a lot of people show up and they enjoy the show.
